What Is User Research?

1. User Interviews

10. Field Studies / Ethnography

What: Extended observation of users in their natural environment over hours or days.

  • Spend significant time with users — hours or days, not minutes
  • Observe without interrupting normal activity

When to Skip User Research

This might sound heretical in an article about research, but research isn't always the answer. Here's when to move forward without it:

When Data Already Exists

Before running new research, check what you already have. Support tickets contain rich qualitative data. Sales call notes reveal objections and needs. Analytics show behavioral patterns. Previous studies might address your question. The answer might already exist — you just need to find it.

When the Cost of Being Wrong Is Low

If you can ship, measure, and iterate quickly, sometimes it's faster to test in production than to research first. A/B testing a button color doesn't need user interviews. Trying a new email subject line doesn't require focus groups. Ship, measure, learn.

When You're Overthinking a Clear Decision

Sometimes research becomes procrastination. If the evidence is overwhelming and the path is clear, don't hide behind "we need more data." Research should inform decisions, not delay them.

When Time Pressure Is Real

Not artificial urgency from impatient stakeholders — real deadlines with real consequences. In these cases, make the trade-off explicit: "We're choosing speed over certainty. We'll validate after launch."

But be honest with yourself: most "time pressure" is self-imposed or political. The cost of building the wrong thing usually far exceeds the cost of spending a week on research. Challenge artificial urgency before skipping research.

Building a Research Practice

The most effective product teams don't do research as a one-time activity — they build it into their weekly rhythm. Here's how to get there.

Continuous Discovery vs. Project-Based Research

Project-based research: Big comprehensive studies at key moments. Thorough but infrequent. You learn a lot, then forget what you learned as time passes.

Continuous discovery: Weekly user contact, even if brief. Smaller individual studies but consistent. Knowledge accumulates. Intuition sharpens. Teresa Torres recommends talking to users every single week.

My recommendation: start continuous. Schedule 2-3 user conversations per week. You'll learn more from consistent small doses than occasional deep dives. The compound effect is powerful.

Making Research Actionable

Research that sits in a slide deck helps no one. Make findings impossible to ignore:

  • Clip video highlights — 10-second clips of users struggling beat 10 pages of analysis
  • Invite stakeholders to observe live sessions — watching changes minds faster than reports
